Clinical Study to Test New Mesothelioma Treatment Regimen
July 23, 2008 – Researchers in New York are recruiting patients for a study to test a new treatment strategy for pleural mesothelioma, a rare and deadly lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
According to Dr. Robert Taub, the lead investigator on the team, current treatment of pleural mesothelioma calls for the removal of the affected lung, a practice that is extremely risky and has produced unsatisfactory and/or insignificant results.
The study, which will be conducted at the Mesothelioma Center at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center, will focus on a combined approach to mesothelioma treatment involving both chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but which avoids surgery if possible.
Researchers hope that this multi-pronged approach will produce better results than current treatment strategies by killing only cancer cells growing on the surface and lining of the lungs, while sparing healthy, vital surrounding tissue.
Patients will receive targeted chemotherapy using cisplatin and doxorubicin and radiotherapy using the P-32 radioisotope. Some will be randomly selected to also receive intravenous chemotherapy with a different set of drugs.
About Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral fiber which was once widely used in industries such as construction, mining, and shipbuilding. Inhaled asbestos fibers irritate the mesothelial lining of the lungs, chest, and abdominal cavity, causing a deadly cancer which often goes undetected until it has reached an advanced stage.
An aggressive and deadly cancer, mesothelioma often kills within only a few months or years of diagnosis. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the cancer, affecting about 75% of all patients.
