All Forms of Asbestos are a Risk
Historically, it has been believed by oncologists and health organizations alike that only one type of commercially used asbestos was a significant threat to an individual’s health. Contrary to this historical belief, the World Health Organization, or WHO, has recently confirmed that all types of commercially viable asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and laryngeal cancer. The findings were reported by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at its most recent meeting.
In the United States, the business world uses chrysotile asbestos most frequently. This is just one of the many forms of asbestos that have been discovered so far. While not good news for anyone who has worked with asbestos of any sort, including those types previously believed to be “safe,” it is good news for the world of prevention of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The more knowledge individuals have, the less of a chance that asbestos will be used and cause mesothelioma.
In addition to its findings that chrysotile and all other forms of asbestos are tied to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and laryngeal cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer also noted that there seemed to be a level of correlation between asbestos exposure and the occurrence of ovarian cancer. The findings are inconclusive but point out that asbestos, which has long been known to cause serious lung diseases and a variety of cancers, may be tied to ovarian cancer.
