Alternative Medicines
When people are diagnosed with a serious illness like mesothelioma, they often find themselves in a vulnerable state of mind. Their strong desire to survive this disease, combined with the pain that conventional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can cause, leads many cancer patients to “alternative” forms of medicine. While herbs, aromatherapy, and other treatments can ease the side effects of conventional medicine, they should never be used as the sole treatment for cancer.
Doctors to Watch Out For
A disturbingly large number of practitioners are out there trying to sell useless products and “therapies” to desperate patients. They often use medical terminology and obscure language to make themselves sound more legitimate. If anyone offers you the following treatments, leave his or her office and contact a certified doctor.
- Cancer vaccines: These will supposedly boost the immune system, allowing it to fight cancer more efficiently. They have not been shown to be effective, and their name is misleading. There is no vaccine against cancer.
- Acupuncture: This is an ancient treatment that involves piercing a patient’s skin with sterilized needles at certain points. While it does help some patients manage pain and stress, some of its practitioners greatly exaggerate its uses. Acupuncture has not been shown to be an effective treatment of mesothelioma or any other serious disorder.
- Hoxsey treatment: This supposed cure for cancer has been popular throughout the US since it was developed by a former coal miner in the 1920′s. Its followers use large doses of herbs and laxatives to “cleanse” their systems. It has not been shown to treat cancer effectively and is currently illegal in the US.
