Asbestos and the Army
Asbestos was a widely used material that made up an important piece of insulation in a wide variety of items. One of the reasons for this is that it was cheap. Another is that it was very effective. The armed forces of the United States were huge consumers of asbestos. Not only was it used in the Navy’s ships, but it was frequently used in the barracks in which other branches of service slept.
This use for housing makes the servicemen at a greater risk. Ordinary factory workers that were exposed to asbestos at work could go home to an asbestos-free environment to sleep and eat. The same is not true for members of the Army.
In fact, prior to the 1970s, all branches of the military used asbestos containing materials (ACM) throughout their barracks. It was not just the Army unintentionally exposing its troops to this potentially deadly fiber. As a result, any soldier that served in the United States Army between 1940 and 1970 may have been exposed to asbestos at some point during his or her military career.
While the levels of exposure of the Army are not on par with those of the Navy, they are still significant. Asbestos has been used throughout Navy ships. While one would initially think that these ships transported only Navy servicemen, the ships actually were used to transport more than their own branch’s men.
