Asbestos-ceramic
Asbestos-ceramic refers to kinds of pottery or ceramics that are made by mixing asbestos with clay, which used to be a common practice. Though newer homes are not built using asbestos, until the 1970s, asbestos was often mixed with clay in order to create firmer and more fire-resistant building tiles. Homes built in the 1970s or before might still have tiles in them that were made with asbestos, which can be dangerous if the asbestos fibers are released, either through wear and tear, or remodeling damages.
Though any exposure to asbestos can be very dangerous, the broader term of asbestos-ceramic can describe both asbestos pottery and asbestos ware:
- Asbestos pottery—made up of less asbestos, containing about 50-60% asbestos
- Asbestos ware—made with more asbestos, containing about 90% asbestos
If you are remodeling your home and you are worried about exposure to asbestos, there are professionals who can remove the asbestos for you, limiting possible exposure to you and your family. Unfortunately, if you were exposed to asbestos in a home or other building and you were not aware of its presence, you may experience devastating health problems.
Signs of asbestos exposure might not appear for years, but can include the following:
- A persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath / wheezing
- Pain / tightening of the chest
There are other symptoms associated with asbestos exposure, though the above are some of the most commonly experienced and reported.
