Basic Treatments for Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Unfortunately, it was not known until too late that asbestos was so dangerous. It has been and still is used in many common products, including insulation in many buildings. While the modern level of asbestos that is allowed in products is much less than in the past, the fact that any amount of this dangerous substance is deemed “acceptable” is a difficult to understand.
Scientists and researchers have yet to find a cure for this horrible disease. However, there are many treatments available to prolong the life of victims and to reduce the pain.
Unfortunately, because the asbestos attacks the inside lining of the lungs, treatment is difficult and unreliable. The type of treatment usually depends upon the stage of the disease and when the person was exposed to asbestos.
There are four main types of treatments for mesothelioma:
- Surgery: While surgery might seem like the easiest option, in truth, the results from surgical procedures have never really render may benefits.
- Radiation: If cancer is caught early, doctors can use localized radiation to attack the affect parts of the lungs. Sometimes radiation is also given in conjunction with other treatments to attack spots that are responding to other treatments.
- Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is well known as the most effective treatment for mesothelioma. In fact it is believe to extend the life of patients by over a year, as compared to other treatments.
- Clinical Trials: There are always more and more experiment treatments going to trial. If none of the more common treatments work, there is no harm in trying a new one.
