Benefits of After Work Showers
Over the years, mines and other dirty workplaces have found that providing after-work showers for their employees has resulted in overall healthier employees that also leave work feeling happier. While the benefits to the individual miners or workers are numerous, there are also benefits to their families.
One of the benefits to a miner’s family of that miner taking a shower at work is that less dirt and dust are tracked into the house in the first place. While many may scoff at the benefit of having less dirt and dust tracked into the house as being merely a 1950s housewife concern, it is very important. Some miners were working in mines that had been contaminated by asbestos. By removing the dirt and dust from their person before ever leaving the work site, these miners were not tracking this same dirt and dust that could contain asbestos into their own home. Clearly, the benefit goes beyond merely having a house that is absolutely perfect at all times.
Another huge benefit of an after work shower at a mine or factory is that it typically is followed up by clean clothes. Many mines or factories provided jump suits or other uniforms that were worn exclusively while at work. When the employee showered and changed into street clothes, the dirty clothes were mostly left at the office. This means that the employee did not track asbestos and other potentially harmful items into the house on his or her clothing. This benefit was particularly helpful to those that handled the laundry in the house.
