Federal Asbestos Agencies
With the wealth of information available about asbestos from different sources, it is sometimes confusing to understand from where the information actually originated. There are many federal groups and organizations that work to set and enforce asbestos guidelines and regulations as well as to conduct research and write reports about asbestos-related issues. They include the following:
- Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Health and Human Services: ATSDR conducts studies to evaluate health risks due to asbestos exposure at different sites around the country.
- Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC): The CPSC is responsible for the detection and regulation of asbestos in consumer products.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The EPA works on a variety of environmental projects to increase scientific knowledge of asbestos, to recognize and address asbestos exposure and reduce risk of exposure, and to create clean-up projects.
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Department of Labor: The MSHA works to assure asbestos-related mining safety and brings attention to health problems associated with mining and asbestos.
- National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Health and Human Services: NIOSH conducts research and forms recommendations to help prevent work-related asbestos exposure.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Labor: OSHA creates and enforces health standards in the workplace, in addition to training and educating workers with the ultimate goal to improve worker safety.
- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Department of the Interior: The USGS researches asbestos minerals as well as monitors mining activities associated with asbestos.
