Gym Asbestos Exposure
The majority of the country’s high schools have gyms for their boys and girls basketball teams in which to play. They are now also used for volleyball and a variety of other sports. Some middle and elementary schools have gyms as well. What are great, large spaces for sporting events and other large gatherings could be spaces filled with asbestos fibers in addition to screaming sporting fans.
Asbestos could be a big problem in any number of older gyms located in the colder climates of the country. This risk exists because of asbestos’ frequent use as an insular material. In colder climates, the fiber was most likely used around the perimeter of the building to trap in the heat and prevent the cold air from getting in.
Gyms are hard to heat because of their high ceilings and overall large space. There is not a whole lot to trap the heat in the lower levels or even prevent it from going through the roof. Schools have always been kept to a tight budget and, in an effort to keep the heating bills down, might have used asbestos, before it was determined to be harmful, to insulate their gyms.
Now, we know that asbestos is a dangerous fiber. Unfortunately, we did not learn this before dozens of schools installed asbestos when constructing their gyms. This leads to the possibility that the now deteriorating asbestos could be releasing fibers into the air of the gym.
