Our bodies are constantly rebuilding themselves: cells divide in two to replace old cells with new ones. When the body’s instructions for creating new cells contain errors, these errors can sometimes lead to mutated cells that spread out of control. Although mutations in a cell’s DNA code are the ultimate cause of all cancers, there are as many different types of mutation as there are types of cancer. There is also no single cause for them: chemicals, radiation, and even viruses can lead to DNA mutations. Our bodies are designed to detect and eliminate cells with defective DNA, but these defenses do not always work.
In some cases, the mutations can affect the instructions that control the creation of new cells. This can lead to damaged cells that reproduce out of control, gradually taking over the body. Sometimes these mutations can result in the creation of cells that can move through the body, carrying the cancer to several locations instead of just one. When cancer spreads, doctors say it “metastasizes.”
