In-depth Look at Pericardial Mesothelioma
Although pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma has caused many others to suffer painful symptoms as well. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium of the heart. The pericardium is the thin tissue that lines the heart, which lets the heart expand and contract with each beat.
While you may not be aware, the body’s internal organs must be able to move naturally to function properly. Thin linings, such as the pericardium, allow this kind of lubricated movement.
Cause of Pericardial Mesothelioma
Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of pericardial mesothelioma to date. Unlike pleural mesothelioma, where the asbestos fibers settle in the lining of the lungs, the asbestos fibers that cause pericardial mesothelioma make their way to the heart. It is believed that the asbestos fibers do this by being absorbed into the blood stream.
Over many years, the asbestos causes scar tissue to develop in the lining of the heart. When this scar tissue is inflamed, cancer can develop.
Treatments
A cure has yet to be found for this type of mesothelioma and, unfortunately, there are limited treatment options. Pericardial mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the heart, making surgery very dangerous and usually not a viable treatment option. Other treatments may include radiation or chemotherapy. Much like the other forms of mesothelioma, the treatments are used to help decrease the pain of the disease’s symptoms.
