In-depth Look at Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, caused by asbestos exposure. Pleural mesothelioma attacks the lining of the lungs, known as the mesothelium. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they make their way to the lungs, lodging in the mesothelium.
Asbestos fibers are particularly difficult for the body to breakdown, as it would with other foreign object inside of the body. The body fails to chemically breakdown the asbestos, leaving it in the lungs to cause further damage.
Symptoms
Over many decades, the fibers cause severe scarring inside of the lungs. This can lead to the development of a tumor and a variety of painful symptoms, including:
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness of the chest
- Chest pain
- Persistent cough
Treatment
There are a variety of different treatment methods available for those who suffer from pleural mesothelioma. These treatments may include, but are not limited to:
- Chemotherapy
- Surgery
- Radiotherapy
- Immunotherapy
Unfortunately, malignant pleural mesothelioma has no known cure. Instead, treatments are used to decrease the pain of the symptoms.
Mesothelioma takes many decades to fully develop and may not show symptoms until 20-50 years after the initial period of exposure. Visit a doctor if you suspect that you may suffer from mesothelioma, even if you were exposed to asbestos many years ago.
