Living with Asbestosis
Asbestosis, also known as diffuse pulmonary fibrosis, is a type of lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they find their way into the lungs. Once inside the lungs, the fibers attach themselves to the lining of the lungs and cause scarring over many years. This scarring can cause very serious damage to the lining of the lungs and, if left untreated, can eventually cause the development of mesothelioma.
Fortunately, not all people with asbestosis will develop cancer, but they do have to live with the symptoms and health concerns associated with the disease for the rest of their lives.
Symptoms of Asbestosis
Asbestos exposure may result in asbestosis, which is often recognizable due to the following symptoms:
- Chest pain
- Breathing difficulties
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness in the chest
- Cough
Much like mesothelioma, asbestosis may not display any symptoms until many decades after the initial exposure. Visiting a doctor is the best way to find out if you suffer from this disease. Skilled doctors will be able to use x-ray tests, as well as MRI and CT scans to determine whether or not you suffer from asbestosis. Treatment options often include surgery to remove affected lung tissue.
Learning to Live with Asbestosis
As mentioned previously, many people with asbestosis never develop cancer, but suffer from the symptoms of the disease for the rest of their life. If you’ve been diagnosed with asbestosis, you will most likely be directed to participate in respiratory treatment methods. This may include the use of a humidifier or any other device that can help to make breathing easier.
Smokers who are diagnosed with asbestosis need to stop smoking immediately. Smoking will drastically increase your chance of developing mesothelioma.
