Asbestos Found in Toys and Other Products
A report of everyday household products containing asbestos was recently released from the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO). The study reveals the presence of asbestos in everyday household items, including children’s toys. With over $165,000 spent to have government-certified labs test hundreds of everyday products for traces of asbestos, the ADAO is serious about getting the word out on the dangers of asbestos. The studies show that high levels of asbestos are directly related to increased risk of lung cancer, Mesothelioma, and Asbestosis. Mesothelioma is a cancer that forms in the lining of the chest and abdominals. Asbestosis occurs when the lungs become scarred with fibrous tissue. The products that were tested and found to contain asbestos came from some of the nation’s largest retail stores including Wal-Mart, Toys “R” Us, Home Depot, Macy’s, CVS, Lowe’s, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Several products contained less than one percent asbestos, which is an acceptable level according to the Partial Asbestos Ban passed by the Senate. Many health experts argue that even one percent is not a healthy level of asbestos and do not understand why asbestos has not been completely banned. No level of asbestos should be considered safe, according to health professionals who have researched the issue extensively.
