“It’s just a PR campaign when they say that asbestos can kill,” said Viktor Ivanov, head of the Chrysotile Association, an industry group based in the Russian town of Asbestos in the Ural mountains region.

Yevgeny Kovalevsky, a forum delegate from the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, said: “For the general population, there aren’t significant risks… I haven’t seen a single scientific study that shows the need for a ban.”

Bahrain

It appears that this country’s government is also getting tough with companies who are not handling the asbestos issue properly:

“The quantity of potentially lethal asbestos removed from companies and dumped at Hafira topped 16.25 cubic metres, it was revealed.

A notice has been issued against a company for removing asbestos without notifying the directorate.”

England

The BBC has given quite a bit of coverage to the asbestos issue, and a recent article detailed the discovery of this substance in an elementary school:

“The asbestos was discovered during maintenance work on the school during the summer holidays. The 190 pupils will be taught in temporary classrooms.

The Health and Safety Executive said asbestos remained the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in Britain.”
