Mesothelioma Symptoms
One of the hardest things about mesothelioma is that it is typically not caught until it is in more advanced stages of its progression. This is because the symptoms related to the disease are frequently indicative of a variety of other illnesses, like pneumonia and asthma, and so doctors frequently don’t think to check for mesothelioma.
The early symptoms of mesothelioma are typically non-specific. This is what leads to delays in the diagnosis of the diseases. Frequently, the symptoms resemble viral pneumonia in that pleural mesothelioma patients may go to the doctor experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, and even a persistent cough. Compounding the issue is the fact that some patients show absolutely no symptoms at all.
Once a patient goes to the doctor complaining of feeling sick, a chest x-ray may show a build-up of fluid or pleural effusion. In 60% of cases, the right lung is affected. Both lungs are affected in a person in approximately 5% of cases at the time of diagnosis.
While chest symptoms are common, the less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma frequently include:
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen due to a build-up of fluid
- Nausea
- Weight loss
- Bowel obstruction
- Anemia
- Swelling of the feet
Because the symptoms of asbestosis are so frequently seen in other diseases, it is important to have a doctor make the judgment. Also, if a doctor diagnoses a person with one disease and he or she knows that he or she has been exposed to asbestos, it may be wise to get a second opinion.
