Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma
There are three types of mesothelioma that effect different internal linings of the body. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium, the lining of the heart. Much like peritoneal mesothelioma, it is not quite known how one develops pericardial mesothelioma. Part of the confusion is how the asbestos ever goes from the lungs or the stomach to the pericardium.
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma. Because of its rarity, the disease has been difficult to pin to a set of recognizable symptoms that can be used to diagnose the disease. The rarity has also been problematic for developing a test to detect it at an early stage as well.
One of the biggest problems is that many of the symptoms that show up in pericardial mesothelioma closely resemble the symptoms of other heart conditions. This overlap makes the cancer relatively difficult to diagnose at an early stage.
The majority of the symptoms exhibited in pericardial mesothelioma are the result of the build-up of fluid and the thickening of pericardial layers. A variety of symptoms may show up. Some of these are:
- Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing, even when resting
- Fever or night sweats
