The Butchart Staging System is one of several staging systems that exist for mesothelioma. “Staging” simply means analyzing the severity of a cancer in order to develop an effective treatment plan. The Butchart system was the first staging system created for mesothelioma, and it dates back to the 1970s. Though other systems have since been created, the Butchart staging system continues to be used today, mostly because it has the advantage of being very simple. The main consideration in this system is tumor size.

The Stages of the Butchart System
The Butchart system consists of four stages, which are as follows:
- Stage 1: The tumor is limited to the lung, diaphragm membrane, pericardium, and/or the ipsilateral pleura.
- Stage 2: The tumor now affects the esophagus, heart, and/or both lungs as well as the chest wall and chest lymph nodes.
- Stage 3: Other lymph nodes, diaphragm, and/or peritoneum have been penetrated by cancer.
- Stage 4: The tumors are metastasized in unrelated parts of the body and cancer exists in the blood.
