The Differences between Asbestosis and Mesothelioma
Asbestosis and mesothelioma are both caused by exposure to asbestos. Both are a result of tissue in the lungs becoming scarred as a result of tiny, trapped asbestos fibers. This scarring takes a long time and so both diseases take a long time to develop and then be detected. Despite their similarities, there are a number of differences between asbestosis and mesothelioma.
One of the biggest differences in the two diseases is how they are classified. Mesothelioma is a severe form of cancer while asbestosis is a chronic lung disease. They are both serious diseases but the entire basis for the illness is different. Mesothelioma is based on the growth of malignant tumors whereas asbestosis is more due to an accumulation of fluid in the lungs or other parts of the body.
The other huge difference between the two is treatment. Asbestosis cannot be cured, at all. Because of this, treatment focuses on easing the discomfort of the patient and attempting to prevent the disease from progressing. Mesothelioma, however, as a cancer, can be treated with chemotherapy. If the disease is caught early, it may be possible to remove the tumors via surgery or by treating them with chemotherapy or radiation. Unfortunately, catching the disease early is very rare and so the prognosis for both diseases is bleak.
All in all, asbestosis and mesothelioma have more similarities than differences and are both nasty diseases to develop.
