The National Cancer Institute
The National Cancer Institute, or NCI, is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is one of eight separate agencies that make up the Public Health Service (PHS). The PHS is part of the Department of Health and Human Services which is an organization that is headed by a cabinet-level official.
Created by the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, NCI is the federal government’s main agent for cancer research and training. When the National Cancer Act of 1971 was passed, the scope and responsibilities of the agency were broadened and the National Cancer Program was created.
In the nearly 40 years since the institute’s responsibilities were expanded, a variety of legislative amendments have maintained the NCI authority and responsibilities. In addition, legislative directions have required new information distribution as well as a requirement to assess the incorporation of various state-of-the-art cancer treatments into clinical, daily practice.
Today, the National Cancer Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program. The National Cancer Program conducts its own research and supports the research of others. In addition, it trains people, disseminates health information, and supports other programs that are devoted to determining the causes, diagnosing, preventing, and treating cancer. The Program is also interested in helping individuals recover from cancer and in providing continuing care for cancer patients and their families alike.
