Types of Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a very difficult condition to have to live with in any form. However, it is very important to know which type of mesothelioma you are suffering from. This will make it somewhat easier for the doctors to treat your condition.
There are four main types of mesothelioma, each affecting a different part of the body. These are:
- Pleural
- Pericardial
- Peritoneal
- Malignant
Pleural mesothelioma affects the chest and lungs. However, it often metastasizes in numerous organs, and can include the brain. This form is not easy to detect as normal detection methods generally do not work. Prognosis is generally not good with this form of mesothelioma. Most patients do not live past 17 months after the onset of symptoms.
Pericardial mesothelioma affects the heart. This is the least common form of mesothelioma, and the symptoms often make it feel like a heart attack. Unfortunately, because this form is so rare, there is not very much research in this field, making it difficult to treat.
Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen. This form often spreads to the abdominal organs such as the spleen, liver, and bowel. Symptoms are most often severe abdominal pain along with nausea and difficult bowel movements. Prognosis for peritoneal mesothelioma is even worse than for pleural. Patients generally do not survive past 10 months after the onset of symptoms.
Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious form, but is fairly uncommon. By the time a diagnosis can be made, patients are generally too far along to respond to treatment.
