Uses of Asbestos
Asbestos is a mineral that is in use in the United States today. Although in the past it was used extensively, its extremely negative health effects became too obvious and too problematic to ignore. As a result, it is hardly used today. When it was used in the past, however, it served a very large number of functions.
In pretty much every industrial good, asbestos came to good use. Cement that had asbestos in it, for example, was used for roofing, pipes, walls, water tanks, and even flower boxes. Asbestos was also used in insulation boards for wall partitioning, ceiling tiles, and fire breaks. Another type of product that asbestos was used in was spayed coatings, which were applied extensively on walls and ceilings.
Aside from the above products, however, asbestos has a vast number of other uses. Asbestos was used in ropes for sealing objects as well as for heaters. Some types of industrial clothing, like fire blankets or oven gloves, even used to have asbestos. Additionally, asbestos paper was used as insulation.
The above uses of asbestos constitute a very partial list. But even such a partial list reveals how widespread asbestos was. Because asbestos was used so widely, many people who became exposed to it suffered from mesothelioma, a cancer believed to be caused only by asbestos.
