Ventilation Systems and Asbestos
In most areas of the country, the large majority of buildings and homes are air conditioned to ensure occupants’ comfort is not dependant on the whim of a weather front. Air conditioning systems circulate air and keep the entire building’s air system fresh and at a somewhat constant temperature.
By circulating air through an entire building, ventilation and air conditioning systems distribute anything that is in one room through the entire building or home. So this means that if there is friable asbestos containing material in one room that gets taken in by a ventilation system, it can be spread through an entire house.
Friable asbestos containing material is any sort of material that is at least 1% asbestos and can be crumbled by hand when dry. This material is very capable of being disturbed and crumbled by everyday actions or events. When it is crumbled, the asbestos is released into the air. It can then be distributed throughout the rest of the house or building by being picked up by the air intake vent for an air conditioning system.
Once the dust or particles have been picked up by the air system, they can be distributed through the rest of the building. An entire building can then be contaminated by asbestos that was located in one room. This can lead to an entire office being exposed to asbestos and potentially developing asbestosis or any of a number of other asbestos-related complications.
