What to Do if You Think You’ve Been Exposed to Asbestos

The majority of people will have been exposed to at least a tiny bit of asbestos at some point in their life. The big problem is when people think they might have been exposed to asbestos in their home during a home renovation. If a person thinks he or she might have been exposed to asbestos, there are two key things to do to ensure that things are handled correctly.

The first thing to do is take action. The first part of taking action is informing the doctor. Even if the feared asbestos exposure occurred just yesterday, a doctor needs to know so that he or she can mark your medical record. If you were in fact exposed to asbestos, having that noted on a chart will mean that at a certain point the doctors will be more likely to test for cancer immediately after a person complains. The doctor could also recommend cancer screening or asbestosis testing at an earlier time. In addition to taking steps to monitor the situation, a doctor can recommend an effective specialist who has extensive experience with diseases caused by asbestos.

The next thing to do is quit smoking. Tobacco smoke has a negative relationship with asbestos. The two combined drastically increase the risk of developing a variety of forms of lung cancer. If it is not possible to quit smoking completely, it would be wise, as a minimum, to cut back on smoking as much as possible.

The third part of taking action is getting yearly flu and pneumonia shots. Regular inoculations will help to reduce the chances of lung infections. Lung infections, if combined with asbestosis, can be very dangerous to a person’s health and lead to a shortened life.

Finally, stay informed. It is very important to stay informed and abreast of all of the new information out there about asbestos, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. This includes awareness of developments in treatment or detection.
