When Mesothelioma is in Remission
As doctors treating mesothelioma often remind their patients, the statistics about long-term survival may not look encouraging, but there are people who live for ten years or longer after being diagnosed with this illness. There is no reliable way to predict who will be a long-term survivor and who will not. While it is true that early diagnosis is a large factor, individual differences between patients in their lifestyles and overall health also seem to be very important.
Follow Up Care
When the cancer cells in a person’s body have all been removed or killed, it is said that his or her cancer is in remission. “In remission” is not exactly the same thing as “cured.” The unfortunate truth is that cancer can return at any time, especially within the first three years after treatment. To help their mesothelioma patients stay healthy, doctors will schedule them for regular follow up appointments for the first few years after treatment.
Many patients are tempted to skip these appointments, especially as time goes on and their illness begins to seem more distant. This is not a good idea; follow up appointments are a doctor’s chance to test a patient for mesothelioma recurrence and address any potential health problems. Attending each appointment is a very important part of staying healthy.
Emotions after Treatment
Ending treatment is a time of relief and celebration, but it can also have some difficulties. For example, the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation can persist after treatment; some of them may even be permanent. Many survivors also have a difficult time coping with the fear that the illness will come back.
Healthy living, including good nutrition and exercise, can help patients live with these negative feelings. It is much easier to feel emotionally healthy when your body is healthy, too. Survivor support groups and volunteer opportunities also help many survivors cope.
