The WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program
Following the collapse of the World Trade Center in September of 2001, a number of emergency responders and workers were exposed to a variety of toxins and pollutants that we know are capable of causing serious health problems. The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program was put in place to give these responders the ability to monitor their health and receive medical treatment and benefits assistance.
The yearly monitoring portion of the program provides yearly medical monitoring examinations, disease tracking, and shared knowledge. The examinations are free and confidential and are designed to track a responder’s physical health and mental health.
Due to the number of toxins and pollutants released by the collapse of the towers, the Program is designed to track the occurrence of diseases in all responders. Responders are also asked to tell the clinic workers if they have been diagnosed with any serious medical problems. This creates a database of illnesses and allows the state Department of Health to see if there is a pattern to emerging diseases. The group is also responsible for sharing their knowledge with responders, health care providers, and the general public.
The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program also offers medical treatment and benefits assistance. The Program offers free and confidential medical and mental health treatment for World Trade Center related conditions. Responders have until 2010 to become a part of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program.
