Asbestos in Construction
The construction industry and the shipbuilding industry were perhaps the two industries most in love with the benefits of asbestos. The construction industry used asbestos in as many applications as they could think of. While this had many benefits in terms of the strength of concrete or in the fire resistant properties of buildings, the practice exposed and has the potential to expose countless individuals to asbestos and all of its ill effects.
In the construction industry, some segments appreciated asbestos far more than others. The individuals most at risk for asbestos exposure include insulators, cement workers, sheet metal workers, plumbers, pipefitters, drywall installers, and electricians. Others that are commonly exposed are roofers, tile setters, and flooring installers.
All segments of the construction industry are at risk for exposure. Those who have just recently gotten into the industry are more at risk for exposure during maintenance, remodeling, or demolition procedures. Those who had or have a construction worker in the family are also at risk. A family member in the construction industry may unintentionally bring asbestos fibers home with him or her on clothes from the worksite.
Insulators were and are most at risk for exposure to asbestos. The asbestos-containing insulation that is either already installed or needed to be installed frequently flaked off fibers which could then get into the lungs. Frequently those working with insulation are working in small, confined areas with little ventilation, putting them at a greater risk since the fibers are more highly concentrated.
In cementing, stapling, or spraying asbestos insulation in buildings to reduce the energy dependence or costs of the building, the installation workers were disturbing the fibers of the asbestos, causing them to be released into the air.
