At the 2007 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, presenters announced the new active therapeutic regimen to treat pleural mesothelioma. This is an incredible finding since there has never been any known cure for patients with mesothelioma.
There are two known malignant forms of mesothelioma. They are pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. The first type rests in the chest cavity and is linked directly to asbestos exposure, and the second is where the malignant cells rest in the lining of the abdomen. Treatment options for mesothelioma have been limited to surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of any of these options. With no known cure, the goal of any treatment has been to improve the quality of life.
This new therapeutic regimen treatment combines Alimta and a platinum compound of either Platinol or Paraplatin. Enough trials were done that researchers have concluded that “the combination of Alimta plus a platinum compound provides significant palliation for patients with previously untreated mesothelioma.”
