Treatment for Mesothelioma

Posted on September 19th, 2007 No Comments

It is not a cure but could very well help people that suffer from mesothelioma.  It is called Alimta or pemetrexed disodium.  Clinical trials have shown that Alimta alleviates some pain and prolongs one’s life.  The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has ruled in favor of allowing the drug to be available to mesothelioma patients.  Not too long ago, NICE was not in favor of making Alimta available.  The United Kingdom’s biggest Union, Unite, believes that pressure from unions and support groups influenced this decision.  Regardless of the reason, Unite is very happy that NICE has made this turnaround.  Unite had been waiting, but more importantly, those suffering from mesothelioma have had a more painful wait.

This is a great development for patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.  It should also provide hope for patients with other types of mesothelioma.  Alimta is not available today but every effort is being made to make sure it is available as soon as possible.

Being diagnosed with mesothelioma is difficult.  However, like this clinical trial and the many others that are being conducted, further treatment options will be available for mesothelioma as well as other incurable diseases.
