Asbestos-removal contractors working at SUNY New Paltz (State University of New York) have been cited for violations of state code 17 times in the past three and a half years. These citations include such frivoloties as failure to have a license and failure to follow hazardous waste removal procedures. All of these, plus many more, are being treated as minor little things that don’t matter, according to a SUNY New Paltz spokesperson.
While the university treats this as a minor matter, Michael Heller, an area resident, doesn’t think it’s nearly as inconsequential as the university would have us believe they do. His wife died of mesothelioma after being exposed, they think, in a school in Maryland where she taught for 17 years early in her career. She died 3 months after being diagnosed.
When a pipe burst in the school, it dissolved glue that had asbestos in it. School workers just picked the stuff up and threw it away without donning protective gear. An asbestos inspector just happened to be on campus that day and started citing the school in 2004.
