On May 8, 2008, Cynthia Leigh Chason has filed a case in Galveston County District Court in Texas against Marathon Petroleum Company, BASF Corporation, Todd Shipyards and other businesses for wrongfully causing her to suffer from mesothelioma. Her father Loy Garner was employed by Marathon Petroleum Company from 1969 through 1979. Before that Garner, worked at Smith Douglass in Texas City from 1961 to 1969. In addition, he did some short-term contracting work in the 1970s for BASF in Freeport, Todd Shipyard in Galveston and Monsanto in Texas City. Garner was required to handle asbestos-containing products, as well as machinery containing asbestos. Garner alleges that in the course of his work, her father was exposed to asbestos fibers. This was brought home and through household contact with her father she was exposed to, inhaled, ingested and absorbed asbestos fibers. This led to her developing mesothelioma. Mrs. Sharon Rosenberg filed a case against Alpha Wire Company in New York City for causing the wrongful death of her husband Joel from mesothelioma. Mr. Rosenberg died at the age of 64 years. Mr. Rosenberg developed mesothelioma as a result of working as an electrician. He spent his entire working life as an electrician in New York with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3. The estate of Paul Bowen has filed a case of wrongful death in Illinois on May 5, 2008. Mr. Bowen died last year from mesothelioma. It is claimed that his disease was wrongly caused. The case has been filed against 73 companies including Bondex International, CBS, Conoco, Phillips, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Goodyear, John Crane, Owens-Illinois, Pharmacia, and Shell Chemicals. Mr. Bowen was diagnosed with mesothelioma on October 8, 2007, and died on December 31. Mr. Bowen worked as a laborer, truck driver, kiln operator, miner and mechanic from 1951 to 2004. Mr. Bowen’s wife also was employed as a machine operator, maintenance worker, finisher and stripper at various locations. She worked with and around asbestos and asbestos-containing products. DuPont and several other asbestos manufacturers are facing a lawsuit after a woman developed Mesothelioma from doing her husbands laundry. Frances Barras, wife and mother of five children, has developed Mesothelioma from handling the clothes of her husband for many years. Louis Barras, her husband, was a refinery worker at a DuPont facility from 1957 to 1985. Mrs. Barras diligently washed and cared for her husband's asbestos-contaminated clothing, inhaling the dangerous asbestos fibers over the years. On April 17, 2008, Mr. George Geisler filed a lawsuit in Illinois, claiming 59 defendants were responsible for his diagnosis of mesothelioma – companies such as CBS, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, General Motors, Goodyear, Honeywell International, Ingersoll-Rand, John Crane, Owens-Illinois, and Phillips Electrical. Geisler had been a machinist since 1978. In that capacity he worked at various locations in Utah and Illinois. Geisler claims that during the course of his employment of repairing automobiles, both at the premises and during repairs at home, he was exposed to and inhaled or ingested or otherwise absorbed, asbestos fibers emanating from certain products. The products contained asbestos when alternatives were available. Geisler claims that the disease has disabled and disfigured him , as well as rendered him incapable of employment. He is seeking compensation of $250,000 in damages for negligence, in addition to compensatory damages and punitive damages.
