Abatement Process Still Leaves Risk of Asbestos Exposure

by Administrator 27. October 2008 14:10

Ridding a building of asbestos, also known as the process of abatement, is vital to the safety of all of those who utilize the building. There is, however, a safe and unsafe way to go about removing asbestos. Unfortunately, the safe way to rid a building of asbestos can be very expensive and time consuming. Some companies or building owners may opt to just begin ripping up the building, however, this is not advised. The Old Peerless Woolen Mills complex located in Rossville, Georgia, is currently undergoing the process of abatement, after asbestos was found during a rennovation project. The process has been delayed, sparking an argument over the building's safety.

Workers first noticed a fine white powder in various locations surrounding the building. Believing that this powder was a sign of asbestos, the workers informed the building owner. The president of one of the building's tenents (Tek-Mak) sent the powder away to be tested. The powder was tested and came back positive for asbestos. When the owners of Tek-Mak took the issue up with the building owner, they were given a note of eviction. Arguments continue to surround this issue, however, the asbestos found in the building remains a serious threat to the safety of workers and the inhabitants of the building.

Prison Fined after Inmates are Exposed to Asbestos

by Administrator 13. October 2008 11:10

Inmates at McNeil Island state Prison in Washington were forced to remove asbestos-filled tile without the protection of any breathing masks, despite their complaints and requests for safety gear. At least 18 people were exposed to deadly asbestos fibers, according to the state Department of Labor and Industries. Of these 18, 8 were prisoners, 8 were Department of Corrections employees, and 2 were from a flooring contractor's crew.

The prison has been fined before for three other projects completed in late 2007, which also put the prisoners at risk of inhaling or ingesting dangerous asbestos fibers. According to the prison officials, they did not think that the asbestos regualtions stated in the Puget Sound Clean Air Act applied to this situation. Even prisoners deserve to be safe from asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma, the disease that is caused by this kind of exposure, is deadly and can take many years to finally show symptoms.

If you or a loved one believe that you have been negligently exposed to asbestos, visit a doctor for a check up and then speak with a skilled mesothelioma lawyer. Contact the mesothelioma lawyers of Williams Kherkher for more information. Call 800-220-9341 today.
