Researchers at Ohio State Universities are conducting studies into the relationship between the inhalation of asbestos fibers and the development of mesothelioma. Although it is widely known that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers causes mesothelioma, the exact physical and biological processes involved are less well-known.
Beginning with crocidolite asbestos, the researchers hope to shed light on the various ways that types of asbestos fibers bond with and damage the cells of internal organs. The team hopes to identify the chain of events leading from initial exposure to cancerous growth, a process which is generally believed to be extremely gradual, often lasting 20-50 years from the date of first exposure.
