Before environmental regulations were put in place, Ambler, Pennsylvania was filled with asbestos manufacturers. Most of the manufactured products, including insulation, siding, shingles and brake shoes, contained asbestos. With all the asbestos manufacturing going on, there was a great deal of asbestos laden waste as well.
Because there were no regulations for asbestos at the time, much of the waste was simply dumped. There may be as much as 3 million tons of asbestos across 66 acres of Ambler. Some concerned citizens have requested that the EPA use a new technology that turns asbestos into a safe gravel. However, at $135 per ton, converting 3 million tons of asbestos would be far too expensive.
