Wisconsin Offers Free Asbestos Abatement Info Sessions Again

by Administrator 31. March 2009 12:18

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is offering more asbestos abatement information sessions starting on April 7. The sessions will be from 1 to 5pm at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau. The sessions will cover new administrative code in asbestos abatement as well as providing safety information.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services recommends that anyone who performs their own building work attend the sessions. By providing these free sessions, the Department of Health Services hopes to eliminate asbestos dangers through a grassroots approach. If all building owners and contractors use the information provided in these sessions, asbestos may be safely removed from many buildings across the state.

Columbia University Testing Chemo Drugs on Mesothelioma Patients

by Administrator 31. March 2009 11:52

Phase II of a clinical trial is being held at Columbia University. Researchers are testing the effectiveness of combinations of chemotherapy drugs in mesothelioma patients who have completed no more than one course of chemotherapy. Oxaliplatin and gemcitabine are being tested in conjunction with each other to treat malignant pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma.

Oxaliplatin is commonly used in the treatment of colon cancer and gemcitabine is generally used in the treatment of lung, ovarian, breast and pancreatic cancers. Previous studies of the two medications have indicated that combining them correctly could result in successfully controlling the cancer. If this phase of the study goes well, Phase III is set to start in 2010 or 2011.

New Diagnostic Tool in Mesothelioma Detection

by Administrator 31. March 2009 11:31

A new tool in mesothelioma detection was unveiled at the conference of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. The new tool is a radiological technique that was developed by Dr Carmen Endress. Both Dr Endress and Dr Michael Harbut, who unveiled the technique at the conference, work at the National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos Related Cancers.

The new technique allows radiologists to visualize asbestos lesions in 3D long before what was previously possible. The process involves taking a high resolution CT scan and enchancing the images with special software. This new technique will have a great deal of benefit in the mesothelioma community by aiding in early diagnosis, as well as better understanding mesothelioma and other asbestos related cancers.

School Building May Receive Asbestos Abatement

by Administrator 30. March 2009 11:50

In Estacada, Oregon, members of the Eagle Creek Annex Committee will be meeting in the first week of April. The committee will be discussing the future of the Eagle Creek Annex, which has been closed for the last three decades. The building, located next to Eagle Creek Elementary School, is dilapidated and contains asbestos which should cost around $18,000 to remove.

Possible outcomes of the meeting include renovation, destruction, and a "learn to burn"  excercise to help firefighters in training. However, because the building is historic, demolition may not be an option. Either way, however, asbestos abatement is most likely in the future of the building whether for destruction or renovation purposes.

If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos, contact the Oregon mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.

Mesothelioma in Housewives on the Rise

by Administrator 30. March 2009 11:30

Mesothelioma cases are beginning to make a shift to secondary exposure. Many workers were exposed to asbestos through their work as shipyard workers, carpenters, factory workers, and numerous other occupations. However, many of those workers returned home covered in asbestos, exposing their families to the dangerous substance.

Housewives are now contracting mesothelioma at a higher rate than the workers who were initially exposed to the asbestos that causes the cancer. This has caused a rise in secondary exposure suits, leading some to question the extent of liability of the companies that allowed the exposure. In the eyes of some, the companies that exposed their workers to asbestos have already paid their debts to the affected workers. It is a thin line, however, when one considers the medical bills of a mesothelioma patient.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, contact the mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.
