In Wichita, Kansas, an appeals judge reversed a dismissal ruling in an asbestos exposure case recently. Now a Leavenworth inmate's asbestos exposure case will be heard again. The case claims that the inmate was exposed to asbestos in 2003 while doing electrical work in a closet. The prison had known the closet contained asbestos since it was found in 1994.
The inmate has reported having an asbestos related illness. Often illnesses do not show up for several years after exposure. This latency period can take up to five decades in some cases. In that time, however, mesothelioma generally reaches a point at which it cannot be cured. This makes asbestos and mesothelioma very dangerous.
