The CSX trestle in Charleston, West Virginia caught fire two weeks ago. Fire blocks made from asbestos material kept that fire from spreading sideways along the trestle. However, the blocks along the trestle are all in various states of disrepair, making them a health risk for the community. Until this is taken care of, the trestle cannot be converted to a bridge for pedestrians and bikers.
The half dozen fire blocks will have to recieve asbestos abatement and be replaced with fire blocks made from a different material. If this does not occur, the people who end up using the bridge will be putting themselves at great risk of asbestos exposure. Public health and safety are now at the top of the list of considerations in the project.
