On May 3, the management at the Washington DC headquarters of NBC warned employees that asbestos had been found in the building. The asbestos was found in glue on the backs of baseboards on the first floor. There are plans to remove the baseboards and the asbestos from the building. A private contractor has already been hired to perform the abatement.
On May 5, the asbestos containing area was sealed off so that asbestos would not be allowed to become airborne. The air quality around the area was also monitored to ensure that no asbestos fibers escaped. When asbestos is found disturbed, actions like these are necessary to keep people safe. Exposure to asbestos can lead to medical conditions like mesothelioma.
