A new treatment for mesothelioma developed from existing drugs has shown success in its first case. The treatment used drugs interferon and lovastatin in low doses after standard treatments failed for the patient. While these drugs have been used for some time, they were used in a different way for this treatment. However, this success does not necessarily show overall effectiveness.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that generally has a poor prognosis. It is caused by exposure to asbestos but generally does not show symptoms until decades after the exposure. This makes it difficult for physicians to diagnose mesothelioma which means that treatment generally does not come until too late. These factors make mesothelioma a very difficult disease to treat.
