Mass. Woman Accused of Asbestos Crimes Disappears

by Administrator 28. May 2009 19:31

A North Andover, Massachusetts woman named Albania Deleon has disappeared after being convicted of 28 felonies related to asbestos crimes. Deleon ran Environmental Compliance Training (ECT), a New England asbestos training school. The school was designed to teach professionals the proper way to handle asbestos during construction or abatement projects, but instead of teaching anyone anything, she was simply selling certificates that stated that they were qualified to handle asbestos removal jobs. For $400, Deleon sold certificates that allowed her "students" to get jobs removing asbestos, despite their lack of any training whatsoever.

It is estimated that more than 2,500 people (many illegal immigrants) managed to obtain these fraudulent certificates, putting thousands of people at risk of asbestos exposure as a result. Deleon was convicted of the 28 felonies last November and had been wearing an ankle monitor as she awaited sentencing. The 39 year old mother abandoned her 3 year old child back in March when she sawed off her ankle monitor and disappeared. She has yet to be located.

Her actions may have caused thousands of people to be wrongly exposed to asbestos. If you have been exposed to asbestos and have developed mesothelioma, contact the mesothelioma lawyers of Williams Kherkher to learn more about your legal options. Call 800-781-3955.

Family Receives $2M for Asbestos Case

by Administrator 27. May 2009 14:35

The family of a woman who was exposed to asbestos years ago was awarded $2 million by a jury. The Illinois woman was exposed to the dangerous substance when she washed her first husband's clothing. The husband had been a worker at the Union Asbestos and Rubber Company where he was exposed to and covered in asbestos.

Unfortunately, the latency period between asbestos exposure and diagnosis of lung cancers or mesothelioma can be decades long. In mesothelioma cases, the prognosis is generally poor. Survival after diagnosis is usually no longer than 18 months, and many patients do not make it to 12. This is in part because the disease is very difficult to diagnose.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, contact the Illinois mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.

Looking for Early Detection Methods

by Administrator 27. May 2009 14:15

Mesothelioma is a very difficult form of cancer to treat in part because it is so difficult to diagnose. Because of this, researchers have been looking for a way to diagnose mesothelioma in its early stages. One group of researchers has been looking into low dose computed tomography (LDCT) to accomplish this. They recently did a study involving 516 people.

The people in the study had all been exposed to asbestos at least 20 years before the test. They were given LDCT chest scans and were either given follow up tests or invited to receive anual scans. 357 of the people were found to have plaques, 6 were diagnosed with lung cancers and 4 with late stage mesothelioma. Unfortunately, the process is still unable to diagnose mesothelioma in early stages.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, contact the mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.

New Method of Asbestos Abatement to be Used

by Administrator 26. May 2009 11:42

At Chaffee Crossing in Arkansas, a fire destroyed over 150 asbestos containing buildings spread over 100 acres on Jan 29, 2008. The cost of asbestos abatement for the land was originally estimated at $4.6 million. However, a new method is going to be tested and possibly used for the entirety of the 100 acres. If this works out, the cost of abatement is estimated to drop to $435,000.

The new method of abatement uses a foam along with a surfactant. The surfactant bonds to the asbestos while the foam keeps everything from becoming airborne. This means that the site does not have to be sealed off and workers do not have to wear respirators to protect themselves from the airborne fibers. The method is being used for the first time at this site, but could be used more widely if it works.

If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos, contact the Arkansas mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.
