A recent study of 77 patients with Stage I through III pleural mesothelioma has had some promising results. Researchers had all 77 patients undergo chemotherapy using Alimta and Platinol to shrink the tumors before surgery. 54 patients then had surgery to remove the diseased lung. 40 patients received radiation therapy after their surgeries.
The researchers found that the median survival for the 77 patients was 17 months. However, for the 40 patients who received all three forms of treatment, there was a two year survival rate of 61%. Using multiple treatments could be a viable option for patients with malignant mesothelioma.
