Research has shown that a combination computerized tomography and positron emission tomography (CT-PET) scan works better at determining mesothelioma stage than either CT scan or MRI alone. The scans are used to determine which patients are good candidates for extrapleural pneumectomy, which removes the lung, heart lining and diaphragm.
Unfortunately, the surgery comes with some risk risk of death or serious complications. Because of this, it is important to know which patients will benefit most from the surgery. The combination scan gives much more accurate staging and allows doctors to make more informed decisions on treatment plans for their patients.
