A recent study conducted by the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust and Duke University has shown that sheet metal workers are at risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos related cancers. The study followed 17,345 sheet metal workers with at least 20 years experience in the field from 1986 to 2004.
Accounting for smoking history, x-ray results and causes of death, the researchers compiled their data into a statistical model. They found that there was a "statistically significant excess mortality" for asbestosis, mesothelioma and pleural cancers. The risk was even shown to extend to workers who were inderectly exposed to asbestos.
