A recent report published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine has shown a high risk of mesothelioma at Department of Energy nuclear sites. Researchers began surveilling workers from four nuclear sites in the mid 1990s. The surveillance ended in 2004, having included nearly 9,000 workers over the years across the four sites.
The study showed a relatively low mortality rate among workers as compared with the general public. 674 workers died during the study. However, upon closer look, the researchers found that the risk of death among asbestos workers or insulators and teamsters was very high. The groups had a 93% and 60% increased risk of death from asbestos exposure respectively.
