DOE Workers at Risk for Mesothelioma

by Administrator 31. August 2009 11:42

A recent report published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine has shown a high risk of mesothelioma at Department of Energy nuclear sites. Researchers began surveilling workers from four nuclear sites in the mid 1990s. The surveillance ended in 2004, having included nearly 9,000 workers over the years across the four sites.

The study showed a relatively low mortality rate among workers as compared with the general public. 674 workers died during the study. However, upon closer look, the researchers found that the risk of death among asbestos workers or insulators and teamsters was very high. The groups had a 93% and 60% increased risk of death from asbestos exposure respectively.

$2M Mesothelioma Verdict

by Administrator 31. August 2009 11:29

In Illinois, a jury recently ruled in favor of the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma. The woman's first husband worked at an asbestos and rubber company in the 1950s. He unwittingly brought asbestos fibers home on his clothes which the woman washed for him. This caused her secondary exposure to asbestos and her later development of mesothelioma.

Because of the long latency period of mesothelioma, symptoms do not show up for decades, and the woman could not be diagnosed until recently. The woman's family sued the company for not warning the workers or their families about the dangers of asbestos. The jury ruled in favor of the family and awarded them $2 million in damages.

Asbestos Found in New York Schools

by Administrator 27. August 2009 11:50

In the Lewiston-Porter School District in New York, several schools have uncovered asbestos during renovations. The asbestos was not expected and has significantly slowed the $28 million renovation project. However, the district still expects to finish the majority of the project by the end of the month.

The asbestos abatement took precedence in the project because it can pose a large health risk. All demolition or renovation projects involving asbestos must focus on abatement before any other action can be taken so that the workers and general public are not exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers.

If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos, contact the New York asbestos lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-781-3955.

2 Companies Indicted for Asbestos Violations

by Administrator 26. August 2009 11:19

In Chatanooga, Tennessee, two companies and three owners and supervisors have been indicted by a federal grand jury for asbestos violations. The indictment charges the companies with conspiracy to defraud the United States and violate the Clean Air Act.

According to the indictment, the Standard Coosa Thatcher plant in Chatanooga was demolished without asbestos abatement. There were large amounts of asbestos in the plant that should have been removed. Because they were not, the general public and anyone who worked to demolish the building may have been exposed to dangerous amounts of the substance.

Asbestos Deemed Safe at Elementary

by Administrator 26. August 2009 10:53

In Lake Zurich, Illinois, parents of May Whitney Elementary School students have been expressing their concerns about asbestos, lead and other environmental issues. One group of parents has been especially concerned about asbestos in the school being shaken loose by nearby trains. The parents believe that the vibrations from passing trains may cause asbestos fibers to be released into the air.

Because of the concerns, air quality tests have been performed at the school in March 2008 and April 2009. All of the samples taken were returned safe. While there may be some asbestos in the air, it is negligible and cannot be found. With these results, the school is continuing to operate and allowing children to attend classes.
