In San Angelo, Texas, Santa Rita Elementary School is undergoing asbestos abatement as part of a renovation project. The work began at the end of the school year in June and is expected to continue through August of 2010. The school was built in 1920 and requires extensive renovation and asbestos abatement.
During asbestos abatement and renovation, parts of the school will be shut down, forcing students to shuffle classes throughout the year. While somewhat inconvenient, this will significantly reduce the chance of asbestos abatement, which could lead to fatal lung disease. According to officials, there has been unexpected asbestos, but the project is still on schedule and under budget.
