Army Archerd, one of the longest lasting journalists in Hollywood, has died at the age of 87 from mesothelioma cancer. The reporter began his career with the Associated Press on October 18, 1945 and went on to Daily Variety, now just Variety, in 1953. His last column for the periodical was published September 1, 2005 but he continued to contribute blogs until July 27 of this year.
Archerd was likely exposed to asbestos while serving in the Navy during World War II. This led to his development of mesothelioma, ultimately taking his life. In most cases, mesothelioma takes decades to develop, making it difficult to diagnose and treat. The prognosis for the disease is rarely good, with most patients surviving only a few months after diagnosis.
