On September 26, 2009, volunteers across the nation will once again work together to spread information and awareness about the cancer mesothelioma. The first National Mesothelioma Awareness Day was observed in 2005, and has since grown into an important event with support from the federal government, local agencies, and many private businesses.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral that was once used in insulation, paint, cement, and a variety of other products. Although its use has declined greatly since the 1970’s, mesothelioma remains a significant public health risk. This is because it can take years – sometimes even decades – to develop to the point when symptoms begin.
Every year between 2,000 and 3,000 Americans are killed by mesothelioma, which attacks the protective lining of the lungs, heart, and other organs. Raising awareness of the disease can help its victims and their families in many ways. Mesothelioma is known for spreading quickly and can be very difficult to treat; it is not considered curable at this point.
Spreading information about this disease can help raise funds for medical research and social support for its victims. Perhaps most importantly, it can reduce the number of future cases by educating people about the hazards of asbestos and how to protect themselves.
