Some in Canada Move to Ban Asbestos

Posted on September 28th, 2009 No Comments

Despite the fact that asbestos has long been known to cause such diseases as mesothelioma and asbestosis, the Canadian province of Quebec continues to mine asbestos, and Ottawa and Quebec City continue to promote the sale of the substance, according to a September 28, 2009 article published in the Montreal Gazette.  Asbestos is known to be carcinogenic, and the World Health Organization estimates that 90,000 people around the world die of asbestos-related illnesses.

In an effort to decrease the number of asbestos-related deaths, Nathan Cullen, a member of parliament from British Columbia, has introduced a bill which would ban the sale and mining of asbestos.  However, there is much doubt over whether the bill has a chance of passing, given that Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper's government continues to subsidize the industry.
