Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Sestak has helped to secure the $300,000 required to remove the asbestos from Cheyney University. The famous and historically black institution was founded for African Americans pursuing higher education opportunities in the slave era United States, making it the first university of its kind in the nation. Many of the buildings which require asbestos removal are on the National Register of Historic Places. The need to remove asbestos from the historic institution serves as a reminder of the amount of asbestos that continues to be exposed to Americans, twenty years after Congress instituted the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule.
